Since 2014, bull kelp forests in Northern California have declined by over 90%. Commercial Urchin Divers are at the forefront of helping to combat kelp deforestation in California. I traveled to Santa Cruz Island and Fort Bragg to tell the story of these watermen for the NRDC. Fun fact: kelp can grow up to 2 feet in a single day! It was fun keeping up with these watermen as best as I could in the freezing water while freediving.
